Teeth Whitening vs. Porcelain Veneers

Both a teeth whitening procedure and the application of porcelain veneers can vastly improve the appearance of your smile; however, they are very different treatments and are far from interchangeable. While veneers can be placed over discolored teeth to restore whiteness, Dr. Fawcett typically reserves veneers for patients with more severe stains that have not responded to teeth whitening. This is because veneers require a long-term commitment and a certain degree of maintenance, whereas teeth whitening does not require any maintenance or the use of any restorations. In any case, Dr. Fawcett will thoroughly evaluate your oral health and help you decide upon a procedure to meet your needs.

What Are the Typical Results of Teeth Whitening?

After even just one of our advanced teeth whitening treatments, patients often notice an immediate, natural yet noticeable difference. It is important to note, however, that the results of teeth whitening are not permanent. Rather, patients often come in for treatment sessions (or perform teeth whitening at home) about every six months to maintain the effects. Furthermore, your teeth are more likely to retain their shine if you practice excellent oral hygiene.

If it’s faster results you’re after, the one-hour in-office Opalescence^® Boost™ teeth whitening treatment may be able to deliver the results you are looking for. During the Opalescence^® Boost™ treatment, whitening gels are applied to the teeth in 20-minute intervals. The powerful whitening formula contains hydrogen peroxide, potassium nitrate, and fluoride, all of which can aid in long-term whitening. Unlike other in-office whitening systems, Opalescence^® Boost™ does not require an activating light for the treatment to start working.

With Opalescence^® Boost™, you can expect a significantly brighter, whiter smile after just a single visit! For resistant stains, the process can be repeated or combined with at-home Opalescence Go^® trays. Results can last for up to three years and may be optimized with professional dental cleanings every six months, proper home care, and future whitening touch-ups.

Porcelain veneers, porcelain crowns (caps), and tooth-colored fillings will not whiten using any bleaching procedure. That’s why an overall aesthetic treatment plan should be considered. This will ensure a smile that’s uniformly white and bright.

Currently, one of the most popular and low-cost procedures is the at-home bleaching technique. This procedure requires a dental visit, where you’ll be fitted for a custom-made bleaching tray. You’ll also receive the whitening gel that’s best for you, as well as thorough instructions for getting the best results from your at-home Opalescence^® Go Trays. Usually, you’ll apply the gel to your custom-made tray, and wear it for around 20 minutes a day for a week or two; tobacco stains may take longer to bleach out.
