What Are the Benefits of Dental Bonding?
Dental bonding is a dynamic cosmetic option that can conceal a multitude of perceived dental imperfections. The versatility and cost-efficiency of bonding treatment often make it an ideal option for patients who desire natural-looking cosmetic improvements to their smile and are not considering porcelain veneers or dental crowns.
Cosmetic Bonding Can Be Utilized as a Solution for the Following Dental Concerns:
- Discolored or deeply stained teeth
- Teeth that are resistant to whitening techniques
- Chipped, cracked, or misshaped teeth
- Gaps between teeth
- Mild tooth misalignment
- Dark metal fillings (see tooth-colored fillings)
Today’s cosmetic bonding materials are very strong and can be precisely color-matched to the color of surrounding teeth. Cosmetic improvements achieved with dental bonding are often virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth. Not all patients are good candidates for dental bonding, and in cases involving more severe damage or decay, porcelain crowns or veneers may provide a more adequate solution. Dr. Fawcett can discuss the best options for your unique needs at the initial consultation.
What to Expect During Cosmetic Bonding
After a discussion of your cosmetic concerns and a thorough examination of your teeth, Dr. Fawcett will be able to determine if cosmetic bonding is indeed the right treatment for achieving your goals. To begin your treatment, he will prepare the surface of your tooth to receive the bonding material. This preparation allows for a strong bond between the tooth and the composite resin. Next, Dr. Fawcett will apply a durable, tooth-colored resin in multiple layers along the affected tooth. Then, a high-intensity light will be guided over the area, hardening the resin. The bonding material will then be sculpted into shape and polished for the most natural appearance possible.
