Four Common Misconceptions About Porcelain Dental Veneers
In our last blog post, our cosmetic dentist in Houston discussed important factors that go into choosing an experienced cosmetic dentist. Today, Dr. Wayde Fawcett talks about some of the myths and misconceptions about one of dentistry’s most popular procedures: porcelain dental veneers.
Porcelain veneers are a common solution for patients who want to restore their teeth at our Houston cosmetic dentistry practice. They can transform smiles by closing in gaps, covering cracked teeth, and whitening your teeth. In addition to working with some of the best dental labs in the area to craft customized teeth restorations, Dr. Wayde Fawcett can utilize our own in-house CEREC® CAD/CAM Ceramic Restoration system to conveniently design crowns and veneers for our patients in just a couple of minutes.
With the popularity of porcelain veneers, there is bound to be a bit of misinformation as to what they are and what they can do. Here are four of the most common misconceptions:
- Veneers are not strong.
Although one may assume veneers are too delicate since they are a thin shell, they are actually as durable as a crown. We use E-max or Empress, a strong ceramic material, to build your veneers since it produces very realistic, natural-looking results that are sturdy and visually appealing. - Veneers can be stained.
Veneers are specifically made to be stain-resistant so you won’t have to worry about drinks or food discoloring your teeth. They also will not darken with age. - All veneers are identical.
Our advanced technology allows us to create customized veneers for each patient, including matching the shade of their surrounding teeth. All of our veneers are unique, just like our patients! - Veneers can fit over the treated tooth or teeth without removing a portion of those teeth.
Another misconception is that you can get porcelain veneers without altering the original tooth or teeth. Some portions of the teeth being treated will have to be removed in order for the veneers to look natural. However, this reduction is typically very small, and only done to enable the most comfortable and natural-looking fit for the veneer.
